7-Day Diary Experiencing Exogenous Ketones
This blog is a “living diary” of my experiences supplementing with exogenous ketones. Over the next 7 days, I will document my keto protocol to reveal whether this supplement has an effect on my keto journey.

My Story
In September 2019, I was greatly injured in a rear-end collision. Physically, I was a mess. My body pain and migraines were off the charts, resulting in oodles of pharmaceuticals, zero activity, and questionable eating habits. My weight also increased by 25 pounds!
In March 2020, I decided to pursue the ketogenic lifestyle, however, I consistently struggle to reach ketosis, and am not able to lose any substantial weight. Both my family physician and physical therapist tell me that the reason why my body is not responding to the keto diet is due to the extent of the healing process… …and the fact that I am in my 50s (yesh).
I am also experiencing what I call “keto confusion” with my food choices. Although I track my daily intake on Carb Manager, I find that by the time I max my fat and protein (and keep my carbs well under) my calorie intake is super low. I have read that counting calories is not important on keto, however, I wonder if my low percentage is causing a reverse effect on my weight loss (to be explored in another blog!)
And so, this rollercoaster of relentless weight overages and low ketosis has brought me to the decision to try exogenous ketones.
I believe that my exogenous ketone experiment is worth the effort — but will only be cost-effective if I supplement for a short term to kick my long-term goals back into gear.
Since I have yet to lose sufficient weight, my goal is to combine clean keto with intermittent fasting. However, do expect some realistic choices! I lead a very social lifestyle and I plan to be out on the town!
Prep Day A
Morning Weigh-in: 163.8 lbs —- this makes me really sad!
Ketone Test Result: Moderate – 40 mg/dl* (tested at 8pm)
Food Intake: 24 hours fast
Water Intake: 1 liter with 2 tbsp each of Himalayan salt and No Salt
Exercise: Walked for an hour + had a half-hour session at physio for dry needling
Comments:
I am a huge fan of intermittent fasting so I decided to give my body a good “flush” to kick-off the week. And with my ketosis level already at moderate, I made a good call!
I typically fast for 48 hours, so I may just continue the fast tomorrow. In this case, I will use day 1 and day 2 as a pre-prep before the actually start my 7-day explorative.
My exogenous ketone order has yet to arrive from Amazon as well (grrr).

Prep Day B
Morning Weigh-in: 164.3 lbs — yesh!
Ketone Test Result:
8:00pm – Moderate – 40 mg/dl
11:00pm – LARGE – 160 mg/dl
Food Intake: 34 hours fast, and ended it with my favorite keto Caesar salad (see recipe below)
Water Intake: 1 liter with 2 tbsp each of Himalayan salt and No Salt
Exercise: none 🙁
Comments:
Well… since my exogenous ketone order from Amazon still didn’t show up, I decided to continue the fast until 8:00pm, followed by a Keto Ceasar salad.
I was quite disappointed when I jumped on the scale this morning. I was hoping to see at least 2 pounds down. I even moved the scale from the bathroom to the living room just to check if maybe it was off-balance.
Aside from the scale, I do feel a shift in my skin around my tummy and it is less bulgy. Can’t wait for the results tomorrow.
Keto Caesar Salad
Romaine Lettuce (100g)
Fried bacon (3 slices)
Kraft Caesar Dressing (14g)

Day 1
Morning Weigh-in: 160.3 lbs YES!!

11:00pm – LARGE – 160 mg/dl — exogenous ketones taken at 8:30pm

Water Intake: 1 liter
Exercise: none 🙁
Comments:
So happy to see some weight flushed off plus even happier to munch on my favorite salads.
I should warn you ahead of time about my eating habits. Historically my weight issues have never been from eating too much. I actually eat very little (far below my recommended calorie intake), and I will also eat the same meal(s) for days on end. This is a habit I pick up from competing (bodybuilding) back in the day.
PS – My exogenous ketones were delivered – thanks Amazon!
My first testimonial — I chose the brand Kiss My Keto in the mixed berry flavor. Now unlike many of the other testimonials I read, the taste is fabulous!
ANTIAGING Keto Caesar Salad
Romaine Lettuce (100g)
Fried bacon (3 slices)
Avocado (3.5oz)
Dressing
Kraft Caesar Dressing (14g)
Blue Cheese (25g) — optional**
Flax Seed Oil (2 tbsp)
Marine Collagen Peptides (1 scoop)
Mix the dressing, flax oil, and peptides in a small bowl, and then add in crumbled blue cheese. Pour into the salad and toss lightly.
Carb 9g — Fat 67g — Protein 32g — Calories 760
** I do not add blue cheese regularly. This tends to knock me out of ketosis as I don’t fair well with dairy. So far, so good, however, I will only include it as an ingredient every 2 to 3 days.
Day 2
Morning Weigh-in: 159
Ketone Test Result:
8:00pm LARGE – 160 mg/dl — 1 scoop of exogenous ketones taken at 8:30pm as well
Food Intake: Caesar salad for lunch and dinner (see recipes above)
Water Intake: 1 liter
Exercise: Just a lot of running around + had a half-hour session at physio for dry needling
Comments:
I certainly am off to a great start! Seeing the scale down a digit was exhilarating, and reaching ketosis before downing a scoop of Kiss My Keto exogenous ketones was already a pleasant motivator.
I probably did not need to supplement with the exogenous ketones. My reasoning is based on my upcoming schedule. Both Friday and Saturday will include drinks and pub food after work. As I am not completely sure about a “correct” protocol with exogenous ketones, I am guessing that it would be in my favor to amp up my ketones now to keep my level from dropping
Socializing two days in a row will be the true test. My plan is to bring my exogenous ketones with me so that I can mix a scoop while at the pub — hmmmm, maybe right in my vodka water… hahaha.
Stay tuned for my day 3 results!
